Foreword of the catalogue

Every project first begins with an idea. To be frank, I am not quite sure if having ideas is good at every stage of a project. However, you may well reply that a project without a strong idea behind it is not powerful and convincing and may ultimately be worthless. I ask myself whether I know the complete landscape of requirements and expectations in order to define something that makes sense. So I am faced with another design task again.
My decision was to start without a formative idea. The first activities involved accumulating different topics and different items, applying only a restricted number of criteria: something was designed by me or with my assistance or something plays an important part in my daily life as a designer. While preparing this exhibition and moving towards the ultimate idea, maybe this was the right approach to gain time for a deeper analysis of defining the “problem”. Actually, this is the normal process in every design development.

For an exhibition the content has to match the location. Thus the location can encourage or exclude certain topics. You can imagine that having the chance to exhibit a very personal view on things you love and live for in an extraordinary location like the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art is a gift. This building is a masterpiece created by the architect Yoshio Taniguchi and I have to admit the joy I felt at the prospect of being invited to fill gallery number 9 with samples of my work was continually dampened by the fear of failure.

For someone like me who lives on the edge of the Ruhr area in Germany, coming to Japan is by no means the quickest and easiest way to reflect on 20 years of professional activity. However, looking back on one‘s personal development has something to do with gaining distance, so why not a spatial one. Now, considering this specific situation, I have become aware that the chance to present this exhibition and the possibility to show exactly this material is also a result of the help given by many other people and friends. So I decided to dedicate one part of this exhibition to this particular topic: discourse and teamwork. The core of the story is focused on our perception of things and the way we try to control the perception of others through the medium of design.

Actually, everything you can say about design has already been said but maybe not by everyone. Let me focus on values and key terms to give a further explanation of the context in which man tries to change the world and the interdependency of important topics to master the challenges involved. The story begins with the ability with which we are born to perceive our natural environment: instinct. A further interesting step starts when we communicate with the world around us and with other people: context. Finally we leave the passive role completely and make an attempt to create and shape the world as we want it: passion and desire.
