Context

It is not possible to judge things without placing them in a specific context. Context is like a scale for separating the good from the bad and this decision is based on the evaluation of various layers of interrelationships. In a design process the analysis of the environment is crucial to meeting the market requirements. However, it is not an arithmetical problem where we only have to put one and one together, it is multi-layered, interwoven into a mesh consisting of reason and emotions and it has a lot to do with speculation. Even things like happiness or contentment are results of a specific relation between a person’s mental landscape and the desirable context.

Today the design of a product that is in harmony with the environment is a very subtle task and reflects the complexity of our culture. This is a direct result of globalisation and digitalisation. The omnipresent databases and global services make it easy nowadays to compare things that will never interact with each other. These relationships are only present in our minds but they nevertheless steer our daily decisions. Good design should be able to explain the reason for a specific function or a product to support us as we strive to get a grip on our everyday life. Well-designed products tell us something about their purpose but seen in the final context they tell us something about their relevance.

状況

具体的な状況に製品を置かなければ、その良し悪しを判断することはできません。使用される状況を把握することは良い製品を悪い製品から区別する基準のようなものであり、この判断は様々な要因評価に基づいています。デザインプロセスにおいて使用状況の分析は、市場の要求を知るために非常に重要です。 しかしそれは1+1のような算数の簡単な問題とは違い、複数の要素がからみ合い、理性と感情が重層化されて網のように織り込まれ、推測しなければならないことが数多くあります。幸福感や満足感のような単純に思える感情でさえ、実は人の心象風景と望ましい状況との間で交わされる特別な関係の結果です。

現在では生活状況と調和しなければならない製品のデザインが非常に繊細な状況となり、現代の製品文化の複雑さを反映しています。これは、グローバル化とデジタル化が直接引き起こした結果です。(インターネットのような)同時にどこでもアクセス可能なデータベースとグローバルなサービスは、これまで互いに関連がなかったものを簡単に関連付けることを可能にしました。これらの関係は実在という形では存在しませんが、それにもかかわらず私たちの毎日の意思決定を大きく左右しています。 良いデザインは“毎日使用する生活機器を容易に使いたい”という使用者の強い要望をかなえるために、特殊な機能の使い方でさえ、容易に理解できるように配慮されるべきです。適切にデザインされた製品は、まずその目的について何かを私たちに語りかけます。しかし最終的には、周囲との関連性について何かを語りかけます。
